Idabel and Ada: the Last Men Standing in SE – What happened?

Last Updated: November 27, 20232 min read

After covering the Durant-Hugo Area and all of Southeast Oklahoma this football season, here is my take on the last teams standing and their playoff appearances this past Friday.

Idabel falls to Millwood, 34-7

Payton’s Take: Though a season to remember for the Warriors, they could not hold on against the Falcons, ending the longest winning-streak in school history of 11-0. As a spectator, Idabel continuously fought throughout the game, but Millwood was simply dominant on both sides of the ball. Seniors Matrail Lopez and Waylon Phillips were playmakers for the Warriors, leading the offense.

“I am so proud of these kids,” Head Coach Scott Pratt said. “I’m just lucky enough to get to coach them and be apart of this. It’s hard watching it end the way it did, but we have built a legacy at Idabel that we will continue to uphold every season.”

Ada comes up short against Wagoner, 42-7

Payton’s Take: This Cougar team has impressed me all season with their tenacity, grit and ability to finish ballgames. However, Wagoner, who is the favorite to win the 4A State Title this year, was an unstoppable force and quickly put this State Quarterfinal game away.

“Sad to watch it end but excited and hopeful for future seasons,” Head Coach Brad O’Steen said. “We have a history of being in the playoffs; we’ll be back.”

This ends the season for the Cougars, who had a successful record of 11-2. This team is just getting started and I feel they will be in State Title talk next season.
