Tahlequah Region Players to Watch: A look at the top underclassmen in football for 2023
Brock Ward – Pryor – Soph. – WR/DB
Started at both wide receiver and free safety as a freshman for the Tigers. Recorded 36.5 tackles and one interception on defense, and had 142 receiving yards. “As his body continues to mature, we think he has a chance to be one of the best players in the state,” said head coach Kenny Davis.
Titan Hix – Locust Grove – Soph. – QB
VYPE Top 100 selection excelled as a freshman at Hennessey, completing 61 percent of his passes for 2,536 yards and tossing 26 touchdowns. Also rushed for 1,052 yards with 18 scores. Has good size at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds and could potentially be a Division I quarterback or tight end. Son of Pirates’ first-year head coach Paul Hix.
Treveon Guthrie – Keys – Soph. – WR/DB
Starter as a freshman at wide receiver and in the secondary for the Cougars last year before suffering an injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
Aiden Armontrout – Sequoyah – Soph. – RB
Expected to be the Indians’ workhorse at the running back position after part-time duties as a freshman. Totaled over 1,000 yards last year and will also play a role on the defensive side of the ball.
Brennan Gatewood – Westville – Soph. – TE/LB
Versatile as a tight end, capable of playing with his hand on the ground or split out wide. Defensively, can play either inside or outside at linebacker.
Brayton Carter – Stilwell – Fr. – WR
Will push for playing time as a freshman wide receiver, while taking snaps behind center for Stilwell’s JV team. Multi-sport athlete. “Poised to make a name for himself in the coming years in Stilwell athletics,” head coach Bryan Ross said.
Cody Botts – Hulbert – Soph. – DB
Expected to contribute as a sophomore in 2023 for the Riders. “Cody will help on the defensive side this year. He brings several qualities that will help us get better on the defensive side of the ball,” said head coach Chad Botts.
Eli Swarer – Salina – Soph. – DB
Collected 35 tackles and four pass breakups as a freshman for the Wildcats. “Eli is a good, young hard-nosed kid. He has great instincts for his age and he sees the big picture in the game. He has a bright future ahead of him,” head coach Clayton Saiz said.
Blaine Battles – Chouteau – Soph. – DB
Will be a force on the defensive side of the ball for Chouteau as a sophomore in 2023. “Hard working, hard hitting young man,” head coach Jeff Brown said.
