Mark Rodgers’ Tulsa Area Quick Hits Class 5A
Coweta
Running back LoLo Bell worked his way open on a nifty reverse motion route and caught the winning two-point conversion in overtime to defeat Del City 18-17. The Tigers clinched the district title in the win.
Coweta has won three straight over Pryor by a combined margin of 126-7.
The Tigers evened the all-time series with Claremore at six, hammering the Zebras 53-14 in the first round of the playoffs.
Sapulpa
Quarterback Colton Howard completed 19 of 22 passes for 308 yards and 7 touchdowns in a 61-19 win over Glenpool.
The Chieftains scored with 1:04 seconds left to defeat McAlester 28-7. It was the first win over the Buffaloes since 1953.
Running back Marco Smith carried the ball 38 times for 227 yards and two touchdowns, including the game winner in a 39-35 win over Tahlequah.
East Central
The Cardinals 47-13 win over Nathan Hale on September 2nd was the 300th for the program since the 1957 season.
Current Muskogee head coach Travis Hill is the all-time winningest coach at East Central. Hill guided the Cardinals to 136 wins from 1998-2011 and the 2005 Class 5A State title.
East Central won its first OSSAA playoff game in 1996, defeating Central 17-13 in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. The Cardinals were eliminated in the second round by Ada 35-6.
Glenpool
All-purpose offensive weapon DeMicah Woods ran for a 19-yard touchdown with under four minutes left to seal a 21-14 win over Skiatook.
Glenpool will look to even the all-time series with Sapulpa at two on October 13th. The two high schools have met only three times despite being 8 miles apart.
The Warriors come into 2023 just four wins away from 300 in school history. Glenpool began playing football in 1969 and has moved from Class A in 1985 all the way to Class 5A in 2016.
Memorial
Chargers running back Johnie Caldwell ran 19 times for 247 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-33 win over East Central.
Memorial will open the season against Central for the 14th consecutive time on September 1st. Central has won the last two with Memorial holding the overall edge 8-5.
The longest running rivalry on the Memorial schedule is Edison. The Chargers and Eagles share LaFortune Stadium and will play for the 60th straight year on September 8th. Edison has won the last four.
Bishop Kelley
The Comets have started slow the past two seasons failing to win a non-district game. Last year’s three non-district opponents combined for an overall record of 29-8.
Quarterback Stice Smith keyed a 19-point, second half rally to beat Claremore 35-33. Stice threw a 70-yard touchdown pass and scored the game winning touchdown on a two-yard run.
Bishop Kelley is coming off back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since 1994 and ’95.
Collinsville
Wide receiver Hudson Henslick caught 10 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns in a 63-20 win over Skiatook.
Collinsville and Skiatook are one of the very few rivals that have played 100 games against each other. Collinsville won last year’s 100th meeting 63-20. The schools are 9 miles apart and both located on Highway 20.
Head coach Kevin Jones enters his 14th season at Collinsville with a record of 109-42. He’s the all-time leader in wins at the school. Terry Due is 2nd place with 61 wins from 1986-1994.
Edison
Wide receiver Corey Rowland caught 12 passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns in the Eagles 37-33 win over Pryor.
The Eagles shutout Catoosa 27-0 to defeat the Indians for the first time since 2001. Dating back to 1990, the Indians own the series lead 4-3.
Thomas Edison has won eight straight against Nathan Hale. The last six are by a combined margin of 319-34. Hale’s last win in the series came in 2006.
Will Rogers
Running back Isaac Arce rushed 26 times for 141 yards and two touchdowns in a 50-14 loss to Collinsville.
The Ropers finished with a record of 6-4 in 2022. It was the first winning season at the school since 2006.
Will Rogers defeated Thomas Edison 18-13 to garner the first win over the Eagles since a 10-7 victory in the 1991 season opener. The teams have only met five times since 1991.
Nathan Hale
The Rangers enter the season on a 35-game losing streak. Their last victory was a 36-35 conquest of East Central in 2019.
Nathan Hale will face Skiatook for the 16th consecutive season. Skiatook has won all but two of the meetings against the Rangers.
The Rangers will be looking for their first district win since defeating Skiatook 26-20 in 2012.
