Can Elk City or Weatherford Handle the Step Up in Class with a Pair of 5A Top 5 Teams Headed West: Games of the Week in Western Oklahoma
Class 5A #5 Elgin (2-0) @ Class 4A #10 Weatherford (2-1)
A pair of former 4A District 1 foes continue their rivalry in the Non District this year in Weatherford coming up Friday night. Despite moving up to 5A for the first time a year ago, Elgin found immediate success winning 8 of 11 games and earning their first playoff berth since 2017. The Owls have started hot this season as well with a pair of dominant wins over Anadarko and Cache. Weatherford stumbled out of the gates in a Week 0 loss to Newcastle, but the Eagles have steadied the ship with wins over Kingfisher and El Reno. Weatherford’s yet to get a signature offensive game from standout Wide Receiver CJ Nickson. These two met in the Non District a year ago. Elgin put it on Weatherford 41-10 down in Elgin. My guess is Weatherford puts forward a much better effort against the Owls this week. The Eagles beat a better than people realize El Reno Indians squad last week on the road. Will they have enough to turn the tables on Elgin? I just don’t think so. It’ll be close but Elgin moves to 3-0 in the Non District with a 28-21 win on Woody Roof Field.
Class 5A #1 Carl Albert (3-0) @ Class 4A #7 Elk City (2-1)
These two decided to play a home and home at the 11th hour a year ago when each lost a district opponent and didn’t want two weeks off before starting district play. Carl Albert has already avenged both its losses from a year ago, besting Coweta and Muskogee already this season. The Titans started their push for a 6th State Title in 7 years on their home field last season against the Elks. After a 1-2 start, Carl Albert boat raced the rest of their schedule starting with the Elks a year ago. Elk City’s coming off their first loss of the season to Class 3A Div II #1 Canadian, TX last week. They’ll have a second straight outing against a top ranked team with the Titans at Big Elk Stadium this week. It’s a monumental task ahead of the Brown and White coming up on Friday night. The Titans are in the conversation for the best team in Oklahoma regardless of class, as well as the best team to ever step foot on the field at Big Elk Stadium. Both teams got the week off after this one ahead of starting district play. Both teams will do their best to get out of this one healthy. Carl Albert starts fast then grinds the clock in a 49-7 win.
