Is there anything better than seeing a player grow or morph into a superstar?

Here are my four players to watch this season with true superstar potential.

4 RB/S Johnie Caldwell – Memorial Chargers

Some will tell you Johnie Caldwell is already a superstar at Memorial High. Caldwell is a two-time state qualifier in the 100, 200, and 4×100 meter relay. Speed: check. Durability: he rushed for 1,200 yards and 11 TDs last year, check. Caldwell is a senior this year and leads by example. Leadership: check. Caldwell checks all of the boxes and will have a great season for the Chargers.

3 WR/RB Kordell Gouldsby – Bixby Spartans

Several factors play into this pick. First, Gouldsby is a talented player and has all the God-given attributes of a ball carrier. Tough to stop in the slot, Gouldsby has the speed to take any reception to the house. Watch his Hudl tape in the state championship game against Owasso. He takes a screen pass to the house thanks to his speed, vision, and ability to make quick decisions with the ball. A utility knife for the Spartan offense, Gouldsby will play quarterback in the Wildcat or line up as a true running back.

2 OLB Carmello Williamson – Nathan Hale Rangers

Make note where you were when you heard the name Carmello Williamson. Only a sophomore, this outside linebacker made 55 tackles and four sacks as a freshman. His reaction time to the play is nearly instantaneous. At 6-foot-3 and 185-pounds, this young man has plenty of room to grow and could develop into that hybrid type linebacker you see at the next level. This is a fun player to watch, and Williamson will leave his mark on the Rangers program.

1 QB Simian Gilkey – Jenks Trojans

Gikey’s abilities are as good or better than any other QB in Class 6A-I. His accuracy and pocket sense are impressive and his ability to escape and make things happen sets him apart. With big targets in the passing game and a solid line, Gilkey has the ability to put up numbers that will rival his peers. In passing league, Gilkey has made difficult throws look easy and has the touch to fling it deep with excellent accuracy. Take note 6AI…there’s a new sheriff in town.
