3 Reasons Union Could be the Team to Beat Bixby
When you’re on top, you have the biggest target on your back. That is something coach Loren Montgomery and the Bixby players have embraced. It’s also something Union is familiar with as well.
Here are 3 reasons why I think the Redhawks could be the team to defeat Bixby this season.
3 – Schedule. Union has a schedule that is slightly more challenging than Bixby. Other than facing Jenks at Jenks in the last game of the regular season, Bixby should win big and most of the starters should be done by halftime. Union’s schedule could see them playing starters a little longer. If you believe in the mantra, “iron sharpens iron,” then you would think the schedule could play a small role in preparing the players for an eventual Class 6AI state final.
2 – Quarterback. I’m giving the nod to Shaker Reisig at Union. While Bixby has three quarterbacks they can call on, Carson Kirby has been their best option. Kirby has the ability to put up big numbers in the Spartan offense, but Reisig is the complete package. Under the instruction of Dub Maddox, Reisig is the most technically sound QBs in Oklahoma, he’s also a great decision maker.
1 – Player Matchups. Both teams have great players who create problems for opposing teams. Union matches up well with Bixby at every position. Guys like Cord Nolan and Garrett Vaughn are excellent receivers for the Spartans but will face the best secondary against Union and DI players like Devon Jordan and Isaac Covington. Both teams have offensive and defensive lines coaches dream of and linebackers who fly around the field. Union gets the nod overall on player personnel.
If these two teams meet in the finals, one thing is certain; the winners are the fans. This is high school football being played at a high level right here in our backyards. Both teams have great coaching, both teams have great communities and both teams represent the dominance of East side football in Oklahoma.
