3 North Area Games to Watch for Week 2
YUKON MILLERS at STILLWATER PIONEERS
Stillwater filled the void left by Bixby last season when they played to a perfect 13-0 season, winning the Class 6AII state title. Now, 6AI Yukon will make the trip to Stillwater and take on the defending champs. Yukon is a team improving, but Stillwater will test their ability to stop a passing game that features several big play receivers and a tight end in Josh Ford who is headed to Oklahoma State next season. Look for Yukon to grind things out and slow down the offense of Stillwater. In the end, I believe Stillwater will prevail, 42-17.
BRISTOW PIRATES at CHANDLER LIONS
This Class 3A vs. 2A battle features two teams 30 minutes apart. Bristow suffered a tough loss in week 1 against Cushing, while the Lions were able to defeat Stroud in their opener on the road. The Pirates will make the short drive to Chandler for this contest. Bristow’s Darien Dansby is a workhorse and will grind out yards before hitting a big one for a score. Defensive line play will be key for the Pirates. Chandler QB Alex Jackson likes to put the ball in the air. The offensive line will need to give Jackson some time to find the open man. Chandler can come away with the win, but both teams will need a run game and Bristow seems to have an advantage in that department. Bristow 24, Chandler 21.
PAWHUSKA HUSKIES at HOMINY BUCKS
This game is worth the price of admission. These two teams are focused on winning a state title in 2023. Hominy is coming off a 13-1 season and a trip to the state semifinals in Class A, while the Huskies (2A) are coming off what they would consider a down season going 6-5. They do feature Noah Wilson at TE who coach Hennesy feels is a DI type player. This matchup will be a physical one. Both defenses play hard and to the whistle. These are the types of games that prepare you for the playoffs. I almost never bet against coach Hennesy, but my gut says Hominy goes 3-0 with a 34-28 win over the Huskies.
